So I got this idea that may help for a site so new. In order to get the ball rolling for some canon character story, I thought an implementation of temporary canons would help.
The idea is that you don't want to take a canon character spot for someone else who'd much better want the position, but you'd also like to have the character there to advance your storyline. What you do for this program is somebody picks the canon character they'd like to play temporarily and perhaps make an announcement somewhere that they have the temporary position of that character.
Perhaps make a directory similar to Who's Who that lists the temporary canons where people can request a position in, and have the people playing the temporaries state in their signature that they hold the temporary position of that character, only allowing one person to a character, however people may play more than one temporary. Making an application should not be a concern, as the only people who should be requesting these positions should already have a profile of a character, and so you should already have an idea of their roleplaying capabilities. Besides, making a profile may deter those coming in who wanted a certain character, as they could probably mistake the character for being taken.
This idea is mostly to the benefit of those who already have a canon character, but letting others have the option to play temporary canons would not be a bad idea either. This would especially help those like Jammerlee, who have a very dependent character like Metal Sonic (the guy doesn't have much to do without Eggman around).
